I am a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, where I gained a BA Honours Degree in Tapestry and Drawing (1993). After graduating I worked in Community Education as a Youth Worker and Art Tutor. This led to me becoming a fully freelance artist and tutor.
As well as developing my own work I run several art classes for adults and children, mainly from my studio in Bo'ness. Please see the Classes page for more details.
ARTISTS STATEMENT
My art work reflects my love of nature and our natural environment. I have a passion for islands and the sea, particularly the West Coast of Scotland, and also for trees and woodland. I visit these types of environment as often as possible to gain inspiration. I carry a small sketchbook for quick sketches and always have the camera handy. I also find it impossible to come home without pockets full of shells and other finds.
My work has previously looked in minute detail at many of these found objects, especially for my ‘Fragments’ pieces, where I have explored the abstract beauty of the colours and textures found within tiny pieces of shells and rocks.
With my recent work I have become much more interested in the wider landscape and exploring the atmosphere of a particular place and my emotional reaction to it. Using contrasts of light I try to get a depth to my paintings that draws you in.
I work with a wide variety of media including watercolour, acrylic, mixed media, charcoal and print. However most of my recent landscapes have been done in pastel as I like to build up the layers of colour to achieve depth and texture.
